Nona Limmen
Bio:
Through photography and art direction, Dutch artist Nona Limmen (1986) explores ideas of mythology, symbolism, the occult, psychology, and shadow work. With her dreamlike and thought-provoking images the Beverwijk born artist invites the viewer to self-analysis, gently nudging them to tap into their subconscious and examine their inner world.
By mixing themes of the collective unconscious and inner power with the obscure, the artist explores the perpetual interaction between light and shadow. Her lense serves as a liminal space that lures you in and makes the world around you fall away as you’re drawn through a portal of her own creation. A realm both ancient and familiar, like a faded memory you didn’t know you had, but yet wish you can always go back to.
Artist statement:
“Since I was a child, I have been compelled by dark themes and folktales, with a particular fascination for ghostly creatures, witches, and all things surreal and unknown. I longed to immerse myself in worlds full of wonder and discovery, and always imagined myself roaming uncharted territory where untold adventures awaited.
Later in life, this fascination for the unknown and the dark feminine has become an intermediary to channel my deepest thoughts and feelings into my creative work. I want the images to tell stories of empowerment, shadow work, and collective healing. These themes drive my work. They represent the hidden elements of human nature, the unconscious parts of our personality we all carry with us but try to actively keep in check.
Photography helped me find the silver linings in tough and uncertain times, and I can only hope it offers the same to anyone who looks at my work.”
